Position description
Electricians install, maintain, repair, test and commission electrical and electronic equipment and systems for industrial, commercial and domestic purposes. Electricians may also work on electrical transmission and distribution equipment.
Electricians may perform the following tasks:
- read electrical, architectural and mechanical diagrams, drawings or specifications to determine job requirements;
- plan the layout of wiring systems;
- test for, locate and repair electrical malfunctions;
- install electrical and electronic control systems and insulated cables;
- install electrical equipment such as storage heaters, water heaters, electrical signs, switchboards and motors;
- assemble and fabricate electrical and electronic components and appliances;
- connect electrical equipment to power supplies;
- connect switches, outlets and other fittings;
- connect circuit breakers; and
- maintain automated production processes.
Employment opportunities
Areas of employment include factories which make or repair electrical machinery and equipment, dockyards, Government Departments and instrumentalities, and electrical contractors who supply install and service electrical equipment in homes, factories, shops and offices.
Promotion to the position of supervisor in workshops and factories is possible. Employment opportunities are closely related to prevailing economic conditions.
With experience and further study, competent trades people may upgrade their qualification to the technician, associate, technologist or engineer level.

Position description
Electrical Fitters apply electrical knowledge to make, fit or repair electrical machines, instruments or appliances.
Electrical Fitters may perform the following tasks:
- install electrical and electronic control systems;
- assemble electrical and electronic components and appliances;
- connect electrical equipment to power supplies;
- maintain automated production processes;
- decide what parts and materials are needed for the job;
- make, alter and assemble metal parts;
- select and cut wires or cables;
- connect wires or cables to terminals or connectors according to wiring diagrams; and
- operate and maintain machine tools such as lathes, drilling machines, welding and heating equipment, and hoists.
Electrotechnology assemblers may specialise as switchboard builders, armature winders who wind or rewind coils on electrical motors and generators, or electrical instrument fitters who test, repair and maintain electrical measuring equipment used in industry.

Position description
Instrumentation tradespersons install, modify, maintain and repair instruments and instrumentation used in measurement and control systems. These instruments measure and control temperature, pressure and flow in processes used in industries such as petro-chemical, mining, food and manufacturing.
Instrumentation tradespersons may perform the following tasks:
- install electronic instruments and control systems;
- examine and test faulty electronic instruments and control systems to diagnose faults;
- undertake calibration and make sure there is correct operation of instrumentation equipment; and
- repair and maintain electronic instruments and control systems.
Instrumentation tradespersons may specialise as control or measurement instrument tradespersons.
With experience and sometimes further training, it is possible to become a supervisor or technician. Post-trade training is also available in new electronic technologies and advanced skills.
Additional information
This trade is a 5 year apprenticeship. Upon completion you will receive a qualification in Certificate IV in Higher Engineering Trade. In addition to the skills you learn on the job, there is a theory component to your training which involves TAFE. MIGAS takes care of organising this for you
