Apprentices – What does it take to be the BEST Apprentice? Good, Better, Best..

So, do you have what it takes to be the BEST Apprentice?

We talk to tradespeople all the time and nearly all of them have a “success story” – the Apprentice they trained who went on to big things.  Their “BEST” apprentice.

There are lots of good apprentices, lots of better apprentices, becoming known as a BEST apprentice???  Well that takes a little bit of something special.

Good apprentices do a good job.  They turn up on time, do what they are asked and get the job done.  Rarely do they rise above that.  Better apprentices turn up early sometimes, they take a bit of initiative every now and then and they are proud of the work they do.  And that’s all fine.  But what does it take to be the BEST apprentice??  Well, BEST apprentices ask themselves a lot of very good questions continually, “How can I make this better, faster, more efficient – the BEST?”  “How can I BEST help the tradesperson I’m working with?”  “How can I stay a step ahead of my tradesperson’s thinking and be prepared for what’s coming next?”  BEST Apprentices develop a knack for continuous improvement.  At the end of the day, an apprentice is there to learn and assist their tradesperson.  They COULD just hand them the spanner when they are asked, OR they could have it ready knowing in advance that it was what the tradesperson was going to need.  A tradesperson’s job is all about time.  And time is money, right? So, if you can anticipate the tradesperson’s needs in advance and save them time you’re well on the way to becoming a BEST apprentice; someone your tradesperson will talk about for years to come.  And one that will never have to go to a job interview again because you’ll get so many recommendations from those you’ve worked with that you’ll walk into jobs whenever you need it.

BEST apprentices don’t turn up to work on time… they turn up 15 minutes, or even half an hour, early to get ready for the day.  And they don’t expect to get paid for that time.  It’s just what they do.

BEST apprentices are usually first back on the job after lunch too.

BEST apprentices make sure their off-the-job training (TAFE) is top shelf too.  Performing well here is really important to BEST apprentices because what they learn well here they can implement in the workplace to make things work better, faster and more efficient for their tradesman.

BEST apprentices also make the most money. I think you’re getting the picture….

We see a lot of BEST apprentices at our annual Awards Nights, and often right beside them is their tradesperson – proud as punch.

There are a lot of other things that BEST apprentices do, and do well.  Given what we’ve discussed here I’ll let you decide what other things you could do to become a BEST Apprentice.

Secure your future in your chosen trade.  Don’t just be good or better – be the BEST and watch awesome opportunities roll out in front of you for the rest of your working life.
