Australian School-based Apprenticeships and Trainees

Australian School-based Apprenticeships or School-based Traineeships offer training qualification opportunities to school students.

These opportunities allow students to complete their senior schooling while also completing a Certificate II in a particular field or industry.

Most commonly, students will be indentured into a school-based traineeship which has a normal duration of two years, working one day per week with occasional school-holiday work. Students will also complete theory work in the form of specific units of competency as per a Training Plan set out by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), such as a TAFE college or institute.

A Certificate II is a nationally recognised qualification and can act as a step in to a full-time apprenticeship or traineeship once schooling is complete.

 

Why choose a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship?

Completing a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship is a great start to your career and provides hugely rewarding benefits to students, including:

  • receiving both an education and on-the-job training at the same time;
  • getting a step ahead of your peers when competing for jobs after school;
  • being paid while you are still attending school;
  • working towards achieving a nationally recognised qualification;
  • gaining the skills and experience to help you move on to tertiary study; and
  • experiencing a great way to transition from school to the workforce.

Unlike other apprentices and trainees, school-based participants are not paid for the time they spend at the supervising RTO (TAFE), and do not accrue entitlements to sick leave or recreation leave. However, students are paid for the time spent working, including a loading to compensate for not receiving recreation and sick leave.

 

Finding a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship

Before choosing a school-based apprenticeship/traineeship, you should think about:

  • The type of environment you would like to work in (for example, outdoors or in an office);
  • The things that interest you;
  • The types of school-based apprenticeships and traineeships available;
  • The skills you would like to learn;
  • The subjects you are studying at school that may complement your school-based qualification;
  • Talking to any one you may know who works in the industry to find out the positives and negatives of the job;
  • How and if the school-based apprenticeships/traineeships will affect your school timetable (you should check with your school’s Vocational Education Coordinator as each school may vary with their requirements);
  • How you will get to work and training (if attending TAFE); and
  • Whether you would be prepared to work weekends and school holidays.

It is important to have the support of your parent or guardian, and the school, to enter into school-based apprenticeships or traineeships. Once you have thought about these questions, follow some of these simple steps:

  1. Talk to your parents or guardians about your interest in becoming a school-based apprentice or trainee
  2. Advise your school's Career Advisor, Guidance Officer or Vocational Education and Training Coordinator about getting involved in a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship
  3. Apply online at the MIGAS website, through your school, or call your nearest MIGAS branch
  4. MIGAS will organise with your school a day and time for interview (here is a list of other services MIGAS provides to schools)

It is important to note that some school-based apprenticeships or traineeships may require students to attend TAFE during school holidays or block training (varies from 3 weeks to 6 weeks full time) during school. At the time of the interview, the students will be informed what the training requirement will be for the position they have applied for.

 

The next step

On successful application with MIGAS, you will be employed by MIGAS and placed with a Host Company where you will complete your on-the-job training.

  • We have a large Host Company network and have the ability to rotate you from company to company, to broaden your skills set across all facets of your trade
  • If productivity is low or if there is a down turn of work at your Host Company and they can’t keep you on, we can assist you in finding a replacement Host Company to continue your school-based traineeship with little to no lost time
  • We provide you with mentoring and support on all matters to do with your school-based traineeship and employment, not only in the workplace but in your home life too
  • We make sure you are up-to-date with your training and remind you when important things are due, for example: timesheets, so you get paid on time!

 

Post school-based apprenticeship or traineeship

Upon completion of your school-based traineeship or apprenticeship, you may have the opportunity to:

  • apply for permanent employment with your Host Company;
  • embark on a full-time apprenticeship or traineeship through MIGAS or another avenue;
  • apply for short-term or long-term labour hire through MIGAS;
  • find employment with a different business; or
  • take on further education.

Students who do not complete their school-based apprenticeship or traineeship while at school convert to full-time or part-time arrangements when they finish their final day at school. Once converted to full-time or part-time arrangements, appropriate award wages and conditions apply.
