5 Tips to Look After Your Wellbeing at Work

Does a new year mean a 'new you'? For some of us, maybe not, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make some small changes to improve your general wellbeing.

What most of us don’t realise is that our wellbeing can impact how happy we are at work.

We’ve highlighted our top tips to help you look after your wellbeing at work this year.

Make Sure You’re Getting Enough Sleep

Many trade apprenticeships require you to be up and at it quite early in the morning (in addition to being physically demanding), so it’s imperative you get as much rest as possible for the day ahead. According to the Sleep Health Foundation of Australia, most adults need 7 to 8 hours of sleep every night.

Try setting up a regular sleep pattern and try to avoid screens, cigarettes and caffeine right before bed to ensure you get a good night’s sleep. 

Maintain a Balanced Diet

A good diet will ensure you have the energy levels to function for your day on site. Ensure you are getting your main meals, breakfast, lunch and dinner and take breaks where appropriate.

Balance up your diet with nutritious energy-rich foods to help you power through your day and ensure you stay hydrated by drinking water throughout the workday.  

Get Physical

Staying physically active is a great way to prepare your body for the challenges of work. A good rule of thumb is to get at least 30 minutes of exercise each day. Find something that works for you in your schedule. Whether it’s going for a walk, playing a sport of your liking, or hitting the gym, it all adds up.

Not only does exercise help get you in shape for your trade, but it also helps release chemicals called endorphins which help boost your mood. Now that’s something to be happy about!

Let Go of Any Bad Vices

Do you have any bad vices (bad habits) that impact your health and wellbeing? Maybe you have a smoking habit, or perhaps you’re indulging in some late-night Uber Eats binges.

Letting go of any bad vices can certainly help you on the path to a healthier you, but also save some serious cash! 

Look After Your Mental Health

Taking care of your mental health can work wonders in improving your quality of life, which then extends into your work life. You’ll find you’ll perform better at work, be more productive, and build better relationships inside and outside of work.

At MIGAS we offer our apprentices, trainees and staff access to our EAP (Employee Assistance Program). The EAP service provides confidential counselling services to help our employees with personal or workplace problems affecting their wellbeing.

MIGAS has also established an alliance partnership with TIACS (This is a Conversation Starter), a professional mental health support service providing free, unlimited and ongoing access to mental health counsellors for Australia’s blue-collar workforce.

The aim of our partnership with TIACS is to help extend access to preventative mental health services for Australian Apprentices like you.
