Can I Start an Apprenticeship at Any Time of the Year?

Yes. Australian Apprenticeships do not have a fixed national start date, and new opportunities are advertised throughout the year. When you start depends largely on the employer and the trade you are pursuing.

How Apprenticeship Start Dates Work

Unlike the school calendar, there is no single intake window for Australian Apprenticeships. A Training Contract can be signed and lodged at any point during the year, which means the right opportunity could come up in February, July or October depending on where and what you are looking.

That said, start dates are not entirely random. There are two broad patterns worth understanding before you begin your search.

Annual and structured intakes

Larger companies, resources sector employers and Group Training Organisations like MIGAS often run structured intake programs, typically commencing in January or February each year. These programs are planned well in advance, and recruitment usually opens four to six months before the intended start date, sometimes earlier for high-demand trades. So start looking around June/July for the following year's intakes.

Structured intakes tend to be competitive. Employers recruiting this way are often looking for a cohort of apprentices at once, and the selection process can involve aptitude testing, assessment centres and pre-employment medicals. If you have your eye on a particular company or industry, it pays to find out when their intake cycle runs and get your application in early.

Year-round recruitment

Many small and medium-sized businesses recruit apprentices based on their immediate workforce needs rather than a set calendar. A position can open up at any time, and these employers are often looking to fill the role quickly. This type of recruitment is less structured but no less legitimate. Some candidates find their apprenticeship through a job advertised in September just as easily as one advertised in January.

What this means for your search

The practical takeaway is that you should not put your search on hold because you missed a January intake or because it is the middle of the year. Opportunities exist across the calendar, and waiting for a specific window could mean missing roles that come up in the meantime.

A few things that will help:

  • Check job boards regularly, including the MIGAS Jobs Board, rather than doing one search and waiting
  • Register your interest with MIGAS even if there is no suitable role advertised right now. When a relevant position comes up, you will already be in the system and we'll send you an email notification
  • Research the intake cycles of specific companies you are interested in and set a reminder to apply at the right time
  • Make sure your resume, references and any required documents are ready to go so you can apply quickly when a role appears

When is the best time to start looking?

If you are finishing school, starting your search in mid-year while you are still in Year 12 gives you the best chance of securing a January intake position. If you have already left school or are looking to change direction, start now. There is no ideal month to begin looking, and the best time is simply whenever you are ready.

The MIGAS Jobs Board is updated regularly with apprenticeship and traineeship opportunities across Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia. If you do not see a role in your trade right now, register your details and we will be in touch when something suitable comes up.
