Do I Get to Choose My Apprentice or Trainee?
Yes. While MIGAS manages the entire recruitment process, you have direct input into the final selection. The candidate who joins your business is someone you have assessed and chosen, not someone assigned to you without consultation.
How the Selection Process Works
Partnering with MIGAS for apprentice recruitment is similar to engaging a specialist recruiter for any role, with the added benefit that MIGAS also becomes the legal employer once a candidate is selected.
The process typically works as follows:
Understanding your needs
Before recruitment begins, MIGAS works with you to understand what you are looking for. This includes the trade or vocational area, the skills and attributes that suit your workplace, site-specific requirements, and any practical considerations around supervision, location and timing.
Getting this foundation right means the candidates we put in front of you are genuinely matched to your business rather than just available.
Sourcing and screening candidates
MIGAS manages all advertising, candidate sourcing and initial screening. We draw on national job boards, our own candidate database and targeted local advertising depending on the trade and location.
All applicants are assessed against the requirements of the role before any are progressed to the next stage.
Aptitude testing
Shortlisted candidates complete aptitude testing relevant to the trade. These assessments evaluate things like numerical reasoning, mechanical comprehension, literacy and other competencies depending on the apprenticeship type.
Results are used to identify candidates with the strongest foundation for success in the trade, not just those who present well on paper.
Assessment centres for group intakes
For businesses taking on multiple apprentices, MIGAS can run structured group assessment centres. These sessions allow assessors to observe candidates in a group setting, evaluating how they communicate, work with others and respond under pressure.
Assessment centres are particularly valuable for large or multi-site intakes where finding the right cohort of candidates matters as much as finding individual performers.
Interviews
Candidates who progress through screening and testing are interviewed, either by MIGAS alone or jointly with your team depending on your preference.
Pre-employment checks
Once preferred candidates are identified, MIGAS coordinates all pre-employment requirements including medical assessments, drug and alcohol screening and police checks where required by the role or work site.
You make the final call
Shortlisted candidates are presented to you with a summary of their assessment results and our recommendation. The final selection is yours. If none of the shortlisted candidates feel right, we go back to the process rather than pushing a placement that does not fit.
What Happens After Selection
Once you have chosen your apprentice or trainee, MIGAS takes care of everything that follows. We employ the apprentice, execute the Training Contract, manage payroll, coordinate off-the-job training with a TAFE or RTO, and provide ongoing Field Officer support throughout the apprenticeship.
Your business receives the benefit of the apprentice's developing skills and contribution, with MIGAS managing the employment relationship and compliance obligations behind the scenes.
Flexibility if Your Circumstances Change
One of the practical advantages of the Group Training model is that it builds in flexibility. If your workload changes or your operational needs shift, MIGAS can rotate the apprentice to another host business to ensure their training continues without interruption.
This is not possible under direct employment, where the obligation to the apprentice remains with your business regardless of circumstances.
