Does MIGAS Employ 2nd, 3rd or 4th Year Apprentices?
Yes. MIGAS regularly employs apprentices who are partway through their training and looking for a new employer to continue with. If your previous apprenticeship was cancelled or your employer can no longer keep you, you do not necessarily have to start again from scratch. In most cases, the training you have already completed will count toward your new Training Contract.
Why Apprentices End Up Out of Trade
There are a number of reasons why an apprentice might find themselves unemployed or out of trade before completing their qualification. None of them necessarily reflect on the quality of the apprentice.
Common reasons include:
- The host employer or direct employer runs out of work or closes down
- A placement that was not the right fit for the apprentice or the employer
- Personal circumstances that required a break from training
- Relocation to a different area
- A change in the host business's operational needs or workforce structure
Whatever the reason, finding yourself out of trade partway through an apprenticeship can feel discouraging. The important thing to know is that it does not have to mean the end of your training.
What Happens to Your Previous Training?
In most cases, the training and competencies you have already completed under your previous Training Contract can be recognised and credited toward a new contract. This means you pick up where you left off rather than starting from the beginning.
The process involves your new employer, a Registered Training Organisation, and the relevant State or Territory Training Authority confirming what has been completed and what remains outstanding.
If you switch your apprenticeship to MIGAS, we manage this process on your behalf, arranging the necessary documentation and liaising with the relevant parties to ensure your previous training is properly recognised, and your new Training Contract reflects your existing progress.
Why Employers Seek Mid-Apprenticeship Candidates
It is not just apprentices who benefit from this arrangement. Some host businesses actively seek second, third or fourth year apprentices rather than first year candidates.
A more advanced apprentice brings a higher level of existing competency to the workplace from day one. They require less basic supervision, can contribute more meaningfully to productive work earlier in the placement and can complement an existing apprentice pool that may already have first year apprentices in it.
For host businesses with experienced tradespeople who want to mentor someone capable of taking on more complex work, a third or fourth year apprentice can be an excellent fit.
How to Find Out What's Available
MIGAS regularly advertises positions for second, third and fourth year apprentices across a range of trades. These roles are clearly marked on the MIGAS Jobs Board so you can identify them quickly.
Do not assume that a cancelled or lapsed apprenticeship means starting over. In many cases, the path back to completing your qualification is more straightforward than you might expect.
