How Do You Ensure a Safe Workplace for Apprentices and Trainees?

Safety is central to everything MIGAS does. Before placing any apprentice or trainee with a host business, we conduct a thorough safety assessment of the worksite to verify that the environment meets our standards. We hold ISO 45001:2018 certification in Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems, and we work closely with host employers throughout the apprenticeship to ensure safe conditions are maintained.

Why Workplace Safety Matters More for Apprentices

Apprentices and trainees are among the most vulnerable workers on any job site. They are new to the trade, often new to the workforce entirely, and developing skills and confidence in environments that can involve high-powered machinery, electrical systems, heavy equipment and other hazards.

Inexperienced workers are statistically more likely to be involved in workplace incidents than qualified tradespeople. They may not yet recognise hazards instinctively, may be reluctant to speak up about unsafe conditions, or may not fully understand the consequences of unsafe behaviour. This is why the safety support structures around apprentices need to be more robust, not less, than those applied to the general workforce.

MIGAS takes this responsibility seriously. Our aim is simple: every one of our apprentices and trainees goes home safely at the end of every workday.

Our Safety Credentials

MIGAS holds current certification against ISO 45001:2018, the international standard for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems. This certification is independently audited and reflects our commitment to a systematic, evidence-based approach to managing workplace health and safety across our operations.

ISO 45001 certification requires organisations to demonstrate that they have identified and assessed workplace risks, implemented appropriate controls, and established processes for continuous improvement in safety performance. It is not a one-time achievement. It requires ongoing compliance and regular external audit.

For host businesses, partnering with a GTO that holds this certification provides an additional level of assurance that the apprentices placed with them are being managed by an employer that takes safety obligations seriously.

We also hold certifications in ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management Systems and ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management Systems, and are registered against the Australian Government's National Group Training Standards.

Site Assessments Before Placement

Before any apprentice or trainee is placed with a host business, MIGAS conducts a thorough safety risk assessment of the worksite. This assessment examines the physical work environment, the systems of work in place, the availability and condition of plant and equipment, and the supervision arrangements that will apply to the apprentice.

Where issues are identified, MIGAS works with the host employer to explore practical solutions and implement appropriate safety measures before placement proceeds. If a site does not meet our safety standards, placement does not go ahead until the issues are resolved.

This assessment process protects apprentices from being placed into unsafe environments and provides host businesses with a structured external review of their safety arrangements that can identify gaps they may not have recognised themselves.

What We Require of Host Employers

In addition to the initial site assessment, MIGAS works with host employers throughout the apprenticeship to maintain safe working conditions. Our requirements of host businesses include ensuring that apprentices and trainees:

  • Work in a safe and healthy workplace that meets all relevant Work Health and Safety legislation
  • Operate under safe and well-considered systems of work under the supervision of a qualified tradesperson
  • Only use plant, equipment and substances that are maintained in a safe and operable condition
  • Have access to current and relevant safety information for their role and worksite
  • Receive a thorough induction and site orientation before commencing work

These are not optional expectations. They are conditions of the hosting arrangement with MIGAS.

Induction and Ongoing Safety Support

Every apprentice placed by MIGAS receives a comprehensive pre-placement induction that covers workplace expectations, site-specific safety requirements and their obligations under the Training Contract. This induction is designed to ensure apprentices understand the safety environment they are entering before they set foot on site.

Throughout the apprenticeship, MIGAS Field Officers conduct regular site visits that include safety observation and follow-up. Field Officers are trained to identify potential safety concerns and raise them with host employers promptly. Apprentices are also encouraged to apply a safety focus and hazard identification in their everyday work, reinforcing a habit of active safety awareness rather than passive compliance.

If an apprentice has a safety concern at any point during their placement, they have a direct line to their MIGAS Field Officer. Concerns are taken seriously and acted on. Apprentices are never expected to manage safety issues on their own.

A Partnership Approach to Safety

Workplace safety in an apprenticeship context is a shared responsibility between MIGAS, the host employer, the supervising tradesperson and the apprentice themselves. MIGAS fulfils its part of that responsibility through certification, site assessments, induction, field officer oversight and clear expectations of host employers.

We also recognise that safety culture is shaped over time through consistent behaviour and open communication, not just through policies and procedures. Building that culture in our apprentices from the start of their training is one of the most important things we can do to keep them safe, not just during their apprenticeship, but throughout their working life in the trades.
