Daniel Van Dyke: From Gippsland to Dubai

Victoria Apprentice of the Year Daniel Van Dyke always wanted to be a tradesperson, but being a country boy, had a pretty limited view of where his career could take him. Since starting a Certificate III in Refrigeration & Air-Conditioning with Johnson Controls, his eyes have been opened to how far a trade qualification can take him; and he’s got his sights set on Dubai!

Where did it all begin?

For Daniel, the interest in refrigeration and air-conditioning came when completing work experience with a refrigeration mechanic while still in school. He loved it so much he gave up another 5 weeks of school holidays to continue shadowing the mechanic, who recognised how keen he was and rewarded him with an apprenticeship.

By the time Daniel reached his third year however, he was unfortunately out of work due to a downturn in the industry. Being from Gippsland originally, Daniel took a chance when he saw a position advertised with MIGAS and moved away from his family to finish his apprenticeship in Melbourne.

Where are they now?

Daniel is on track to complete his apprenticeship with Johnson Controls in March 2016, by which time he’ll be 21. He hopes Johnson Controls will keep him on after his apprenticeship, as he wants to be able to give back to the company who helped him to finish his training. After that though; the world. As Johnson Controls are an international brand Daniel would like the opportunity to work for them in Dubai.

In addition to winning the MIGAS Victoria Apprentice of the Year, Daniel has also been recognised by Johnson Controls as their Victoria Apprentice of the Year, as well as receiving the “Above and Beyond” Award.
