Top Benefits of an Apprenticeship for Employees

An apprenticeship or traineeship is a great opportunity for those who love hands-on learning, are passionate about their chosen field, and want to take their education to the next level.

If you’re keen to forge a career in a sought-after trade or business specialty, keep reading to find out the top benefits of taking an apprenticeship pathway, and how MIGAS Apprentices & Trainees can help you get your dream job.

Introduction to Apprenticeships

Australian Apprenticeships include both apprenticeships and traineeships and provide employees with the opportunity to learn new skills while being paid to work and study. Training is conduction both on-the-job under supervision, and off-the-job with a Registered Training Organisation such as TAFE to gain a nationally recognised qualification.

Apprenticeships are more often traditional trade-based training and take around 3 to 4 years to complete. They include such areas as Fabrication and Mechanical Engineering, Electrical, Automotive, and Construction

Traineeships are generally shorter at 1 to 2 years and cover many non-trade areas such as Business, Warehousing, IT, Marketing and Retail. There are also some trade traineeships that are 2 to 3 years in length, including Civil Construction and Water Treatment.

In Australia, apprenticeships and traineeships are available to anyone of working age who is an Australian citizen or permanent resident. You can undertake an Australian Apprenticeship if you're a school leaver, re-entering the workforce, or as an adult worker wishing to change careers or gain new skills. School-based apprenticeships and traineeships are also available while you're still finishing Years 10, 11 or 12.

If you’re thinking of undertaking an apprenticeship or traineeship, here are the top benefits to consider.

Apprenticeships are a Pathway to a Career

Apprenticeships provide recognised entry points into occupations within a wide range of industries with high demand for skilled workers.

Trade apprenticeships, in particular, are highly valued and can set you up with a long-term, lucrative career depending on your trade specialisation.

You will develop transferrable skills that can lead to other international opportunities, running your own business, and entering supervisory or management careers.

Get Paid While You Learn

Apprenticeships and traineeships allow you to get paid while you learn, so you don't have to choose between studying and working.

As you undertake your hands-on training with an employer and your formal qualification study, you’ll be progressing towards completion – and your pay will increase each year.

Get Connected with Industry

Apprenticeships are an attractive study option because you're able to gain practical experience as you learn and start building industry connections. This can be particularly valuable if you're interested in specialising in a particular industry or role after completing your studies.

Many apprenticeship graduates have found their hard work and dedication has been rewarded with a full-time job at their host employer once their apprenticeship or traineeship is completed.

Get Qualified and Recognised

Apprenticeships provide opportunities to gain industry-recognised qualifications which lead to further educational and career opportunities, whether that is further study or starting up your own business. Each Australian Apprenticeship includes a Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector qualification, from Certificate II, III or IV to Diploma-level depending on the apprenticeship, combined with paid employment.
