What does an Air-conditioning & Refrigeration mechanic do?
An Air-conditioning and Refrigeration mechanic assembles, installs, services and repairs domestic and commercial air-conditioning and refrigeration systems.
An Australian apprenticeship in an industry that is booming, and will continue to produce opportunities worldwide, is an excellent option for kick starting your career.
On the day to day you could perform a large number of tasks including checking and overhauling whole systems, diagnosing faults and replacing defective components, bolting and soldering pipes to connect equipment and checking the alignment and accuracy of the fit. There is a large element of trouble shooting and critical thinking, using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of all the possible solutions to the issue, as well as considering the relative costs and benefits of each option.
Current air-conditioning and refrigeration apprentice and 2013 QLD/WA Awards Night nominee, David Quinn, says he will often be assigned challenging jobs that include fault finding or repairs on high risk jobs. After completing work experience at school over a variety of trades (including carpentry, electrical and plumbing) he knew-air conditioning was something he wanted to do as a career.
Recently completed air-conditioning and refrigeration apprentice and fellow nominee, Travis Scholl, took ownership of maintaining large customer sites towards the end of his apprenticeship with excellent customer satisfaction feedback. Travis enjoys thinking on his feet and solving problems, and wanted a career that always offered something different.
