Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Apprenticeships

An Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Apprenticeships will prepare you for a job where you may assemble, install, service and repair industrial, commercial and domestic refrigeration and air-conditioning systems in homes, shops, factories, office buildings and hospitals.

With a qualification in the Air-conditioning and Refrigeration trade you will become part of the Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning Industry (HVAC). Within the Electrical trade sector this apprenticeship pathway offers you the most diversity in practical skills exposure. An Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration apprenticeship is perfect if you have an investigative mind and would like to do a variety of practical work including (but not limited to) plumbing, sheet metalwork and electrical diagnostics.

This trade requires a four-year apprenticeship. MIGAS will facilitate your practical work placement with one of our quality host employers. In addition to on-the-job training, we will assist you with enrolment through a Registered Training Organisation to complete your certification. With MIGAS you will be fully supported throughout the duration of your placement by a Field Officer and by the wider MIGAS Apprentices and Trainees community.

A day on the job in Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration

Sunrise
Follow blueprints and specifications to install units part by part and bolt them down
Midday
Drill holes, install mounting brackets and cut, bend and thread piping
Night
Fill systems with gas or fluid to test for leaks; remove test gas or fluid using vacuum pumps
Attach piping to refrigeration systems using sleeves, couplings or unions and solder joints to form a complete system
Repair or replace faulty parts in industrial and household refrigerators and air-conditioning units
Work with Electricians, Pipe Fitters and Carpenters to install ducting for air-conditioning

Qualifications

  • Certificate III in Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration
  • Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade (Air Conditioning and Refrigeration)
