Undertake a Mechanical Fitter Apprenticeship

The advised path to attain a Mechanical Fitter Apprenticeship is through a Group Training Organisation (GTO) like MIGAS Apprentices & Trainees. Completing your apprenticeship with a GTO ensures that you are placed with the right host employer and have on-going support throughout your training.   

A successfully completed Australian Apprenticeship involves learning the practical and theoretical skills of a mechanical fitter and obtaining a nationally recognised qualification.

What’s Involved in a Mechanical Fitter Apprenticeship

A mechanical fitter is a highly skilled operator who can complete various tasks.

A typical day at work for a mechanical fitter includes a huge range of tasks, including:

  • Understanding drawn designs and specifications
  • Optimising fabrication processes
  • Using machinery to cut, grind and shape materials like metal and heavy plastic
  • Working specialised machinery and hand tools
  • Assembling fabricated parts to produce machines, equipment and tools
  • Machine and equipment maintenance
  • Administering the fabrication process to deliver high quality parts

Duration: A Mechanical Fitter Apprenticeship takes around 4 years to complete.

  • Upon successful completion, you will have gained a Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade
  • Full-time working weeks of 38 hours paid work 
  • A fully qualified Mechanical Fitter can greatly increase earning capacity in line with high demand across several industries 

Mechanical Fitter Apprentice Wages

Award wages for a mechanical fitter apprentice as at 1 July 2024 are:

  • Under 17 years of age: $516.15 to $908.42 per week
  • 17 to 20 years of age: $567.77 to $949.20 per week
  • Over 21 years of age: $825.84 to $949.20 per week

Additionally, you may be eligible for applicable Modern Award inclusions, host employer-specific benefits, and government support payments.
