How to Nail a Video Interview
The COVID-19 pandemic has forced recruiters to adapt and introduce new virtual tools into their hiring process.
While video interviews are nothing new, the pandemic has made them crucial to hiring new recruits when social distancing has made face-to-face interviews almost impossible.
Even if you've had lots of interview experience, we realise you may not have completed a video interview before - so we've compiled our top tips to help you ace your next video interview.
Tip 1: Prepare, Prepare, Prepare!
Sounds like a no-brainer, right? But you'd be surprised how many candidates fail to prepare before an interview. Review and think about your application and why you applied for the job. Research the organisation and think about why you would be a great asset to them.
If you're still at school, think about the skills and experience you've gained at school or in any extra-curricular activities. Think about how these skills and experiences can be transferrable to the skills required for this job!
Tip 2: Set the Scene
Find a quiet, well-lit place where you can be free of unwanted distractions. Turn off music and any social media or text alerts that may pop up as a distraction.
Ensure the background is free of clutter and avoid sitting in a space where people or pets may pass by in the background. If you can't clear the background, consider blurring the background or adding a plain background filter if possible.
Tip 3: Conduct a Trial Run
Practice makes perfect! We suggest asking a friend or family member to ask you practice questions to help you prepare for the interview. Some example questions could be:
- ‘Tell us a bit about yourself’
- ‘What were your motivations for applying for this role?'
- ‘How would your colleagues describe you?'
Tip 4: Dress for Success
Ensure you are looking your best for your video interview so you are feeling confident. Dress as you would for an in-person interview (smart casual is your best bet).
Tip 5: Keep it Professional
Keep language professional in your video interview and look directly at the camera and speak loudly and clearly. Keep good posture and avoid fidgeting.
Tip 6: Relax and Have Fun!
Remember the reason the recruiter want to interview you is because they want to get to know more about you and your experience. Imagine you are telling a friend why you are the best person for this job.
