Your Trade Career Mechanical Engineer

A career in Mechanical Engineering can open the door for you to become a Toolmaker, Machinist or a Fitting and Turner, just to name a few.

You’d play a vital role in any manufacturing workshop, and find yourself working in many different environments such as automotive, mining, food and beverage, and manufacturing.

During your apprenticeship you would be working to create parts of precision machinery, special components that don’t exist yet, or finding solutions to problems, ensuring that no one day is the same.

A Day in the Job in Mechanical Engineering

  • Study blueprints, drawings, models and/or specifications of the items to be made
  • Program and operate numerically controlled, computer controlled and electrical discharge machine tools
  • Plan out the processes required for creating parts and assembling them into the larger items
  • Set up and operate machine and hand tools to form the required metal shape
  • Design tools and precision equipment
  • Create complex internal shapes using advanced tools such as electrical discharge machines

This trade requires a four-year apprenticeship. MIGAS will facilitate your practical work placement with one of our quality host employers. In addition to on-the-job training, we will assist you with enrolment through a Registered Training Organisation to complete your qualification.

With MIGAS you will be fully supported throughout the duration of your placement by a Field Officer and by the wider MIGAS Apprentices and Trainees community.
