Why Choose a Group Training Organisation to Do Your Apprenticeship?
When you do your apprenticeship through a Group Training Organisation (GTO) like MIGAS Apprentices & Trainees, we are your legal employer. We place you with a suitable host business where you complete your on-the-job training, and we support you throughout the entire apprenticeship, from recruitment through to completion.
What is a Group Training Organisation?
A Group Training Organisation is a specialist employer of Australian Apprentices and Trainees. Rather than being employed directly by the business where you work, you are employed by the GTO, which then places you with a host company where you carry out your on-the-job training.
The GTO manages your employment, payroll, training contract, off-the-job training coordination and ongoing support. The host company provides the workplace, the work and the supervision. You get the benefit of working in a real business in your chosen trade, with the added security of having a specialist employer looking after your interests throughout the process.
MIGAS employs apprentices and trainees across Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia.
The Key Advantages of Doing Your Apprenticeship Through a GTO
You have someone in your corner
This is the most important difference between a GTO apprenticeship and being employed directly by a business. When you are with a GTO, you have a dedicated Field Officer whose job is to support you throughout your training.
Your Field Officer visits your workplace regularly, checks in on your progress, helps you navigate any challenges and is available when things are not going smoothly. If issues arise between you and your host employer, your Field Officer acts as a go-between and helps resolve the situation. You are not left to handle workplace difficulties alone.
Your training continues if something changes
This is one of the most significant practical advantages of the GTO model, and one that many apprentices do not fully appreciate until they need it.
When you are employed directly by a business, your apprenticeship is tied to that employer. If the business runs out of work, closes down, or if the placement simply is not working out, your apprenticeship can be left in limbo. Finding a new employer willing to take on a mid-apprenticeship candidate and continue your training is not straightforward, and many apprentices in this situation end up cancelling altogether.
With a GTO, if a placement is not working for any reason, MIGAS finds you a new host employer. Your employment continues, your wages continue, and your training continues. The disruption to your apprenticeship is minimised, and you are not left to navigate the situation on your own.
You can gain varied experience
Some trades require exposure to different types of work environments to fully develop the competencies required for the qualification. An electrician, for example, may benefit from experience in both residential and commercial settings. A mechanical fitter may need exposure to different types of equipment or industries to round out their skills.
A GTO can facilitate this by placing you with different host employers at different stages of your apprenticeship, giving you a broader range of experience than you might get with a single direct employer. This benefits both your development as a tradesperson and your employability once you are qualified.
Specialist recruitment that finds the right fit
MIGAS manages the recruitment process for both apprentices and host employers, which means we are working to match the right candidate with the right workplace from the start. A placement that is well-matched from day one is more likely to succeed than one where the fit was not properly considered.
We get to know what you are looking for in a host and what matters to you in a workplace, and we factor that into where we place you. That is something you do not get when you apply directly to a business through a job board.
Administrative support throughout
Managing the administrative side of an Australian Apprenticeship involves more than most people expect. Training contracts, off-the-job training scheduling, government reporting, payroll, leave entitlements and more all need to be handled correctly throughout the life of the apprenticeship.
MIGAS takes care of all of this. Your wages are processed weekly, your training coordination is handled, your Training Contract is managed and updated as needed, and your progression is monitored. You focus on your trade. We handle the paperwork.
Why GTOs Have Higher Completion Rates
GTOs consistently achieve higher apprenticeship completion rates than the direct employment pathway. This is not a coincidence. The combination of proactive support, continuity of employment and the ability to resolve placement issues before they become cancellations makes a measurable difference to outcomes.
For apprentices, a higher completion rate means more people achieving their qualification and the career that follows. For host businesses, it means less disruption and a better return on their investment in developing an apprentice. For the broader economy, it means more qualified tradespeople entering the workforce.
Is a GTO Apprenticeship Right for You?
If you value having support and a point of contact throughout your training, want the security of continued employment if your placement changes and would benefit from a specialist employer managing the administrative side of your apprenticeship, a GTO is a strong choice.
