What Apprentice Support is Available?
As a MIGAS apprentice or trainee, you have a dedicated Field Officer supporting you from day one through to completion. This includes regular site visits, help navigating workplace challenges, keeping you on track with your training, and assistance with any personal or professional issues that might affect your apprenticeship.
Why Support Matters
Starting a trade apprenticeship is exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming. You are navigating a new workplace, learning a trade from scratch, managing off-the-job training commitments and, for many apprentices, entering the full-time workforce for the first time.
Apprentices and trainees who are well supported throughout their training are significantly more likely to complete their qualification and get more out of the experience along the way. That is why the support MIGAS provides to our apprentices and trainees is one of the most meaningful differences between undertaking an apprenticeship with a Group Training Organisation and going it alone with a direct employer.
Your MIGAS Field Officer
From the moment you start your apprenticeship, you will be assigned a dedicated MIGAS Field Officer. Your Field Officer is your primary point of contact throughout your training and is there to support both you and your host employer for the full duration of your apprenticeship or traineeship.
Your Field Officer will:
- Provide a comprehensive induction before you start, so you know what to expect from your first day on the tools and in your off-the-job training
- Ensure all paperwork and Training Contract obligations are completed correctly from the outset
- Conduct regular check-ins and on-site visits throughout your apprenticeship to see how you are progressing and whether you need any guidance or support
- Help you stay on track with your training milestones and qualification requirements
- Provide a confidential space to discuss any workplace challenges, personal difficulties or concerns that may be affecting your training
- Assist with performance matters and act as a go-between if issues arise between you and your host employer
- Support you through any changes to your placement, including if you need to be moved to a different host for any reason
Having a Field Officer in your corner means you are never left to figure things out on your own. If something is not working, there is someone whose job it is to help you resolve it.
Support Before You Even Start
MIGAS support begins during the recruitment process, before you have been placed with a host employer. Our team will help you understand what is involved in the apprenticeship or traineeship you are applying for, prepare you for the interview process and make sure you are going into the arrangement with realistic expectations and a clear understanding of your obligations.
Getting this foundation right means fewer surprises once you start, and a better chance of the placement working well from the beginning.
Financial Support
In addition to your Award wage, there are a number of financial support options that may be available to you as an Australian Apprentice depending on your trade, your personal circumstances and your location.
These include government support payments for apprentices in priority occupations, trade support loans, living away from home allowances and various state-based assistance programs. Eligibility criteria apply and the available support changes periodically as government programs are updated.
MIGAS can help you understand what you may be eligible for and assist with accessing relevant payments. For a full overview of the financial assistance options that may apply to your circumstances, visit our financial resources for apprentices page.
MiScholarship Program
The MiScholarship Program is available exclusively to MIGAS-employed apprentices and trainees, and is one of the ways we recognise the effort and commitment our apprentices bring to their training.
Each year, the program provides cash sponsorships for top performing apprentices and trainees who are going above and beyond in their training and workplace contribution.
The MiScholarship Program also acknowledges apprentices who have shown resilience and determination in overcoming personal or professional obstacles to build a career in the trades. It is not just about who performs best on paper. It is about recognising the full picture of what our apprentices bring to their journey.
