• Where are the apprenticeships based?

  All positions are based at Anglo American’s Aquila Coal Mine, approximately 32 km south of Middlemount in Central Queensland.

  Candidates who already live in Middlemount or the surrounding area are strongly encouraged to apply.

  Please review the individual vacancy for any specific travel, transport or residency considerations associated with the role.

• What is the difference between the full-time and school-based apprenticeships?

  The full-time apprenticeships are on a 4/3 roster where you will complete your trade qualification through a combination of paid work and formal training. You must have already completed year 12 to apply for these roles.

  The school-based apprenticeships allow eligible secondary school students to begin an apprenticeship while they are still at school. You will combine school, paid employment (one day per week) and formal trade training, giving you practical industry experience before completing Year 12.

• Can I apply for more than one position?

  Yes. If you are interested in both the Electrical and Mechanical Fitter Apprenticeships, you can apply for each vacancy separately. Please review each position's eligibility requirements before applying.

  We recommend considering which trade best matches your interests, strengths and career goals.

  Only eligible high school students may apply for the school based roles.

• How do I know which trade is right for me?

  Electrical and mechanical trades involve different types of work and skills.

  Electrical apprentices develop skills in installing, maintaining, testing and fault-finding electrical equipment and systems.

  Mechanical Engineering apprentices develop skills associated with machinery and mechanical equipment, including maintenance, fitting, repair and fault diagnosis.

• What does the recruitment process involve?

  Places within the Anglo American – Aquila Apprentice Intake are competitive, and shortlisted candidates will progress through a structured recruitment and selection process.

  The process includes:

  • Online application
  • Initial phone screening
  • Aptitude or skills testing
  • Interviews
  • Reference checking
  • Assessment Centre participation (full-time roles only)
  • Pre-employment medical and other required checks
• What happens at an assessment centre?

  Shortlisted candidates for the full-time Electrical Apprenticeship and Mechanical Fitter Apprenticeship will be asked to participate in an assessment centre. (Excludes school based roles.)

  An assessment centre is conducted in a group setting where you and other applicants in the running for the apprenticeship intake will be assessed on your practical ability, teamwork, communication skills, and ability to problem solve and adapt to different situations. You will be involved in a number of individual, group and practical activities that will be relevant to the position for which you are applying.

  MIGAS assessment centres generally start with an introduction and overview of the day followed by an ice breaker to help everyone feel relaxed. Then we move on to the individual and group exercises where you will be assessed by our team throughout the day. 

  Once the group activities have concluded you will then prepare for your one-on-one interview with representatives from Aquila Mine.

  You can prepare by simply being yourself and, on the day, ensure you’re interacting with the group and contributing to the activities.

• What should I include in my application?

  Make sure your resume is up to date and includes your education, employment history, relevant work experience and any pre-vocational or trade-related training you have completed.

  For school-based applicants, include your current school year level, subjects and any relevant vocational education or work experience.

  You should also read the individual vacancy carefully before submitting your application to make sure you address any role-specific requirements.
